Creative solutions…

46gJFI just love looking back at the progress of guns from the hand cannons of ancient China to the advanced weapons of today. You can tell, as time went by, people knew and understood the inherent weaknesses of the time. It’s interesting to see how some of the more creative (yet less engineering inclined) people thought of ways around the problems.

Take this revolver, for example (click the image for a closer look). It’s only referred to as Joseph Enouy’s, British patent #1359. Near as I can tell, it was a one off design that was…impractical to say the least. It has 8 separate 6 round cylinders attached to a large rotating wheel giving this gun 48 potential shots.

I think it’s pretty obvious why this never caught on. It’s kind of funny, when you look at the modern semi-automatic pistol, how everything about it just seems logical. The way the magazines work to the way it brings in fresh rounds, it makes you wonder why something like it wasn’t created earlier. Was it the lack of precision machining or was it people saying “there’s no way it could be that easy” and not bothering to try?

Either way, I’m still staring at that picture and trying to figure out how a person would even carry it around. Maybe a shoulder sling?
