2014: The Year of the Rifle

riflesPistols? Oh yeah. I’ve got those down. Shotguns? Clay disks beware. Rifles? …Oh..hey..there’s something distracting over there. What? Oh yeah, rifles…uhm…sure…I’ve shot a .22LR rifle a few times. What do you mean “long range”? Twenty five yards is pretty long. I mean, that’s a quarter of a football field and those pro players get payed a lot of money to run 25 yards, right? Two hundred and fifty yards?! Are you insane? Oh…that’s average for rifles?

Ok, I’ll level with you a bit. I’m not overly knowledgeable on rifles. It’s not that I don’t like them, far from it. I love rifles. I love my Mosin, I love my AR (although that’s a carbine but still), I even love my little Remington 597 .22LR. I just have no idea how to shoot them properly. My priority has always been pistol and later on shotgun. The rifle is, essentially, the final piece of the firearm Triforce and I just don’t have the items necessary to defeat Ganon and capture that piece. That’s why, when the site started, I brought my buddy TJ in to handle the rifles articles. He knows rifles. The problem is, TJ is serving our country overseas for the next couple years and the demand for rifle articles is rising.

My recent trip to Media Day at SHOT Show made me realize how bad it was when I had to walk right by all those rifle shooters because, frankly, I was too embarrassed to even try.

In the words of the 9th Doctor: No More!

This year, I will be dedicating myself to learning how to shoot rifles at long range and I’m inviting you to join me on the journey. While there will still be plenty of pistol and shotgun as well, I’m starting all the way back at the beginning with rifles. We’ll start by figuring out what kind of rifle I want in the first place. Then we’ll move on to calibers, scopes, technique and more. My goal is that, by next SHOT Show, I’ll be comfortable enough to make a beeline to the rifle demos and to be able to show off my skills. Way back in the beginning I described this site as “for noobs, by noobs”. It’s time to get back to those roots.

Join me, won’t you?
