Free for All Fridays

Free For All Friday, 6-13-2014: Clay shooting, magazine springs, point shooting and Archangel stocks

1aUsually on Free For All Fridays, I start out with a few random thoughts then get to the questions. More often than not, those random thoughts have nothing to do with guns or even the questions themselves. They are just whatever I happen to be thinking about whenever I go to put the Q&A’s together in a presentable format. Today, we have the largest number of questions in one FFAF so far so I’m going to skip the randomness for now and jump right into it! Continue reading

Free For All Friday 6-6-2014: 10mm Glocks and Grip Technique

MrsNoobSummer is here. In Florida that means two things: crippling heat and the constant threat of hurricanic apocalypse. The first makes it difficult to shoot at my beloved outdoor gun club. The second will drive you crazy if you sit there worrying about it all the time. Now, I know I’m not the only one that shoots outdoors and Florida certainly isn’t the only place that gets hot. We’ve talked in the past about how heat can affect your guns. The short is: you might notice them acting a bit more…lively…when you shoot them. Just as important: stay hydrated. Getting overheated saps your strength and impairs your thinking. Drinking a large amount of fluid will do wonders to alleviate that. Heat stroke is a horrible experience and one that’s pretty easy to avoid.

Let’s get to some scorching hot questions, shall we? Continue reading

Free For All Friday 5-30-2014: 40 vs 9, PX4’s, Boron BCGs and…oh yeah…a new writer!

9I met my buddy Chris at my very first SHOT Show. He was there as Gabby’s photographer and that’s when we were introduced. After 5 minutes of chatting, it was like we’d been buddies since high skool. I’m proud to say that as of today, Chris will be coming on board as a writer for Gun Noob! I’m sure he’ll be making a post soon to fully introduce himself but in the meantime let me just say he’s going to be bringing a great new perspective to the site. So welcome him aboard! Free For All Friday 5-16-2014: 1911s, CCW Behavior Shotguns and Kahr pistols…

warhammerSo the wife is insisting that I take up a hobby that has nothing to do with computers. She thinks it’s unhealthy sitting in front of my screen all the time and wants me to “unplug”. Guns don’t count because blog and, apparently, my love of Formula 1 racing doesn’t count either because I spend the whole time with my iPad in my lap chatting with other fans because…well…I’m a Formula 1 fan in a NASCAR world and I’m the only person I know who follows it. So anyway, in order to make her see the error of her ways, I’ve started playing Warhammer. Think of it as the geekiest game of chess you’ve ever seen…that or think of it like a real life RTS game like Command & Conquer or Starcraft. You have armies of hundreds of little miniatures that you’ve assembled and painted then you make them battle. It’s an absolute blast to play and the strategies are challenging. She will regret this.

Oh yeah, this is a gun site… Continue reading

Free For All Friday 5-9-2014: Mosins, Competition and Pocket Pistols.

1aI’ve got something big cooking. It’s going to be a couple months before I get to even hint at what it is but trust me, it’s awesome. At least I think it’s awesome. You could be like “meh” but in the meantime, I’m super excited about it and you should be too.

Also, it always amuses me how sometimes I get a batch of questions and messages that deal with one very specific subject. This week, it was about my beloved Mosin Nagant. Not only did I get a message on FB from a reader telling me he bought one and loves it (glad to hear it, dude!), but I got 2 emails with a similar story THEN I get a question from quite possibly our biggest fan Skyler (who has almost single handedly been keeping this weekly column alive and we thank him greatly for it). Hey, Skyler, if you’re reading this (and I’m pretty sure you are), send me a private message via Facebook when you get the chance, please. Continue reading

Free For All Friday 5/2/2014: Target shooting caliber

22I was in an off mood earlier this week. Surprisingly, the resulting editorial went over quite well and I’ve gotten more than a few messages from readers agreeing with the sentiment. Oddly enough, even though I made absolutely sure not to mention any offending blogs in the article, I got a couple of messages from some bloggers who felt I was specifically talking about them. Here’s a pro-tip: if you’re not mentioned by name and yet still feel that you were being called out, you might want to do some introspective soul searching as to why. I’m not sayin’ nothin’, I’m just sayin’. Continue reading

Free For All Friday, 4-25-14: Gun Safe Locations and Carry Gun Questions

nraamIt’s Friday again! It looks like all the nasty weather in Florida is clearing up. Segues are difficult, sometimes. The NRAAM is starting up today. People have been talking about it all week and a bunch of companies have announced new products ahead of time. I’ve never really understood why companies reveal their big product in its entirety weeks before a trade show meant to reveal new products. To me, it just ruins the full excitement of seeing a product for the first time. That would be like saying “Tyler Durden isn’t real” weeks before the first trailer for Fight Club even premiered (oh…uhm…spoiler alert). Tease your product. Work up a frenzy. Make people fight to get to your booth to see what the heck you’ve been teasing for a month. Also, it seems more really new stuff is being announced at NRAAM than at SHOT Show. What’s up with that? I’m guessing it’s because all the major companies found out that I already blew my travel budget on SHOT this year. Continue reading

Free for All Friday: 4-11-14, Eye strain and Misc. AR parts

customfamilysmallBeen on a bit of a tear about those stick figure family stickers on cars. I’ve noticed a growing backlash against them as of late and that makes me happy. I saw one sticker today that said “Your stick figure family will be exterminated” and had a bunch of Daleks attacking. It made me laugh. While I doubt reality supports it, I’d like to think that one of my early articles had a bit to do with the anti-stick figure trend. Better living through delusions, I always say.

You know what’s way more awesome than stick figure families? People who send in questions for Free for All Friday! We had two questions this week: Continue reading

Free For All Friday: 4-4-2014

IMG_1524It’s Friday again! I don’t know about you but I look forward to Friday the moment I wake up on Monday morning. It’s been a good week, actually. I’ve been able to increase my updates a little bit with industry news and such. At the same time, I had a lot of fun with the review of the Portal Gun for April Fools. Questions? We’ve got three this week. Almost had a skeet shooting hat trick this week but there’s definitely a clay sports theme with the first two. Continue reading
