Gear Review: Dragon Holsters

Dragon-Holsters-SIG-P220A good IWB holster makes all the difference in the world. It needs to be concealable, of course but it also needs to be able to retain the gun so it doesn’t fall out. Comfort, however, usually isn’t high up on the list of features. They tend to poke in weird locations or push against vital organs or rub the skin up against the gun raw. They also tend to weigh the pants down in one particular spot making things extra uncomfortable.

There are, however, certain kinds of IWB holsters that seem to have all these problems licked. They have a kydex part that holds the gun and it’s mounted to a large leather piece with two clips attached. The leather keeps the gun from rubbing against you and also protects it from salt and sweat. The clips are far enough apart that it spreads the weight of the gun better as well. Continue reading

Gear Review: DeSantis Nemesis Pocket Holsters

desantis_nemesis_taurus_pistolsIf there was a secret to pocket carry, and I’m not saying there is one but if there was it would be a good pocket holster. Now, some will say “isn’t my pocket a good enough holster?”. Not by any stretch of the imagination. So the obvious question is “why?”.

Well, if you just drop the gun in your pocket, it will be jostling around and will never be in the same place if you have to reach for it. This would lead to unnecessary fumbling in case you have to draw. Also, the trigger won’t be protected which could lead to something snagging the trigger and causing the gun to go off. Considering it’s location, that’s a very bad thing. Then you have the added bonus of a very obvious gun shape in your pocket. Finally, and this is something they don’t tell you very often, the front of a pistol can very VERY quickly wear a hole in your pocket. It can take as little as 2 or 3 days depending on the make of the gun and its shape.

A good pocket holster fixes all these problems. Quite a few companies make pocket holsters of all shapes and sizes and, let me tell you, I’ve tried out a great deal of them. Like many, I started with that one brand that you can get at just about any sporting goods store and/or Walmart. It’s not a bad holster by any stretch but it wasn’t a great one either. Alternate Carry Locations

holster_ah1So we’ve talked about pocket carry and IWB carry. From the way people talk, it seems like those are the only two options. In actuality, they’re the most talked about because they’re the most efficient. Sometimes, however, your outfit, situation or body shape just doesn’t allow for the big two.

So with that in mind, let’s take a quick run-through of some other options. Keep in mind, these may not be the most preferable but as I like to say: I’d rather have this than a pointy stick. Continue reading

Dealing with Concealed Carry Anxiety Syndrome

2204059683_09eb09601b_nMaking the decision to start carrying concealed is a pretty big step. It’s a huge responsibility and, let’s be honest, there’s some inherent risks involved. Walking out your front door carrying a gun for the first time is incredibly stressful for many people. What if it goes off in my pocket? What if someone sees the gun? What if I drop it?

There’s a term for this: “Concealed Carry Anxiety Syndrome” (CCAS). It’s that feeling of constant panic you feel when you first start carrying. The good news is, you’re not alone. We here at the Gun Noob Institute for CCAS Research have some tips to help relieve the stress that new carrier might encounter. Continue reading

Pros and Cons of Inside the Waistband Carry

DragonHolsterSometimes, you want a little bit more bang for your buck. I mean, the .380 is nice and all but sometimes you want a bit more BBQ sauce. Sure you can go with one of those trendy pocket 9’s but, seriously, 7 rounds of 9mm? Really? My Glock 19 holds 15 rounds of 9mm so with 2 magazines I could have what would take me 4 magazines with those tiny pocket nines. If I want to carry some beefy .45 rounds, what then?

Don’t get me wrong, I love my XDs but outside of 5.11 Tactical, companies are making cargo pants more for style than function anymore so I’m limited on the clothes I can pocket carry in. Plus, I have fallen in love with my big Sig and there’s something so comforting about that giant pistol. Continue reading

Pros and Cons of Pocket Carry

pocketHolsterI really had to fight the urge to go with the “is that a gun in your pocket” cliche. Wait…did I technically just make that joke? I mean, I didn’t just flat out say it. By not saying it and instead making fun of it, I avoided making the joke itself but by referencing it, I might as well have just lead with it because it’s in everyone’s head now but just because it’s in people’s head doesn’t mean I said it and oh now I’ve gone cross-eyed.

Logical paradoxes aside, I love pocket carry. As long as you go with a pocket carryable gun, the chances of you ever accidentally showing your gun is almost nil. Other than your pocket tearing and the gun falling out of your pants leg, I really can’t think of a scenario where you could expose your firearm to an unsuspecting public. On top of that, with IWB, you have to plan your outfits but with pocket carry, you only need big pockets. Continue reading

Beginner Gun Review: SIG Sauer P220

IMG_1627I have a list of firearms I refer to as my “Bucket List Guns”. These are guns, gun or bad, that I want to own, or at least shoot at some point in my life. Of course there’s the obligatory Desert Eagle .50 and the 50 BMG and so on. Other ones might puzzle some people. One such gun is the SIG Sauer P220. “That’s a bucket list gun?!” some might say. It’s a fairly common pistol, in the grand scheme of things. While it’s not exactly cheap, it’s not prohibitively expensive either coming in at around $850-$950 depending on your location. It also doesn’t have some super special technology like the Desert Eagle’s piston system either. Continue reading

Reader Question: How to Protect Yourself in Private Sales?

45ACP_hiI got a message from Mike:

I recently read one of your articles that mentioned the craigslist “like” gun site. My question is, much like the real craigslist, is there are a lot of fraud/criminal set up situations on these sites? How do I know a legit seller from someone who is just trying to setup criminal activity?

First off, thanks for stopping by the site and for your question! Buyer beware is the the ultimate guideline regardless of where you do business. While there’s no 100% reliable way to determine if someone is legit or not, there are some guidelines you can follow that will greatly help to protect you and your money. Continue reading
