Gear Review: The SpeedVault by GunVault

SpeedVault1One thing I wind up saying a lot is “I’d much rather have a .22LR pistol than a pointy stick”. The gist of which being that, even though .22LR isn’t my go to choice, it’s better than nothing at all. In many ways, a gun safe is much like that as well. A cheap, locking gun cabinet is better than just leaving the gun in your nightstand or sitting on a shelf. Granted, a top of the line, super thick, high tech gun safe with all the bells and whistles is the best choice but most of us don’t have $5,000 or more to drop on one…and if we did most of us would rather spend it on a new gun.

At the same time, most gun safes are there to protect your entire collection. There is, however, a line of purpose built safes that are for very specific storage methods. One of the most popular makers of such safes is GunVault. They have safes that are made to be mounted under desks and in desk drawers. One particular safe, however, caught my attention a while back: The SpeedVault. Continue reading

Team Hornady Takes on Fallen Brethren 3-Gun Challenge

gI_95427_Hornady logo_3Grand Island, NE: Three hundred fifteen competitors stood at attention as the American flag was raised and sang the National Anthem during the opening ceremonies of the Fallen Brethren 3-Gun Challenge. But it was the round of applause afterwards that set the spirit of the match, held October 4-6, 2013 at the Spartan Tactical Range Complex near Jacksboro, Texas. Now on its third year, the event honors the heroes who fell at the Battle of Mogadishu 20 years ago. Continue reading

TrackingPoint ShotMade Tour Heads to Houston, Phoenix, Tampa and Dallas

I got a chance to play with the Tracking Point rifle at SHOT Show earlier this year. This gun is an absolute trip and I highly HIGHLY recommend anyone in the area pay them a visit if you can.

gI_72295_338T-rightside-quarterbackTrackingPoint™ has expanded its ShotMade tour, where the Smart Rifle™ company travels state to state demoing their precision guided firearm technology for press and firearms enthusiasts. Four new dates were announced this week via the TrackingPoint ShotMade blog. The new dates include Florida, Arizona and multiple stops in Texas and all will take place before the end of the year at private facilities. The tour provides the chance for attendees to be one of the only people in the world to ever have fired the extremely high end Smart-Rifle, an experience that has been reserved for tour attendees and the company’s first adopters. Smart Rifles are currently only available through an application process, with demand stretching wait times further as the technology gains steam. The chance to shoot one is very controlled by the company, with even tour attendees going thru a separate application process to confirm their chance to shoot the coveted best rifle available. Shooting Tip: Slow The Heck Down!

teacherAs I’ve helped quite a few people learn to shoot by this point in my life, I’ve noticed certain patterns emerging. Certain attitudes in life seem to consistently translate to a certain type of shooting. Certain flaws in technique pop up over and over again. One of the biggest mistakes I’ve seen new and even moderately experienced shooters make over and over again is rushing their shots.

Now don’t get me wrong. When push comes to shove and you’ve got Robber McCriminalpants kicking in your front door, speed will be of great importance. When you’re trying to improve your technique, however, speed can destroy your chances of hitting anything. Continue reading

Beginner Gun Review: Smith & Wesson Model 686

IMG_1602In the interest of full disclosure, I feel the need to make a confession: I’ve never really liked revolvers. Now, I recognize that there are people that love them and swear by them but I’m not one of them. Suffice to say, it comes down to the fact that I just don’t like the way they feel. While there hasn’t been many, every revolver I’ve shot to this day was clunky and downright painful to shoot. Give me a nice, semi-automatic pistol of any caliber any day and I’m happy.

I’m also working on becoming an NRA certified instructor. One of the requirements is that I have to demonstrate ability with a revolver.

Crap. Continue reading
