Shoot Your Carry Ammo At Least Once

hornadyCDLet me tell you a story. Remember that XDs review I did a while back? That was my father’s gun. He bought it for his daily carry gun. After I did the review and gave it back to him, he held off carrying it for a while until he had the chance to shoot it himself. That turned out to be a good idea.

I’ve always been a fan of the Winchester PDX ammunition. The problem is, there was a bit of an ammo crisis in recent months. You might have heard about it. I believe a couple of blogs might have mentioned it as well. Either way, PDX ammo was difficult to find so my father loaded the gun with Hornady’s Critical Defense ammo instead. Continue reading

How to Tell You’re Paying a Good Price

store1Guns aren’t cheap. Well, some guns are cheap but most guns aren’t. For the vast majority of us, the purchase of a gun is a big deal and requires a great deal of planning, budgeting and bribing of the significant other.

Personally, I’ve always had the rule of “if it costs more than $100, I have to spend at least a week making sure I’m not only buying the right thing but getting a decent deal.” For starters, it saves me from impulse buys which rarely turn out well. At the same time, it makes sure I make good use of every penny.

When we’re at the store or gun show and picking out our gun, how can we be sure we’re getting the best bang for the buck…so to speak? Let’s take a look at how I work through it, as well as some of my favorite resources for either buying a gun or at least figuring out the going rates. Continue reading

Team Hornady Chalks Up Wins at AR15.com/Rockcastle Pro Am 3-Gun Championship

gI_95427_Hornady logo_3Grand Island, NE (PRWEB) September 22, 2013

Team Hornady was unstoppable among the largest field of shooters ever to compete at the AR15.com/Rockcastle Pro Am 3-Gun Championship, August 23-25, 2013 in Park City, Kentucky. Two thousand acres of unforgiving terrain and eight Pro stages designed by some of the top three-gunners on the circuit coupled with a stamina-withering heat index did not deter Team Hornady’s shooting skills or the accuracy of their Hornady ammo. The Top 10 Movie Guns

What is it about Hollywood and guns? I don’t think there’s any entity out there that can create a desire for a particular firearm more than putting it in the forefront of an awesome movie. It doesn’t matter if it’s real or not, if it’s awesome enough in the film, it moves to our number one Christmas boutique gift item. We’ve covered the best gun related movies, but what about the best movie guns? Every action villain needs a nasty looking gun and every hero needs an equally if not more awesome gun. These are the guns, real or not, that either make the movie or define the action movie genre all together. As I go along, I’ll try to classify each as a either villain’s gun, a hero’s gun or neutral. Caracal Pistol Recall…

Well, this is the first time I’ve ever seen this in a recall before! It seemed strange enough to me that I wanted to verify its authenticity before I posted on it. Basically, there seems to be something really wrong with the pistol. If you send it back as part of the recall, they don’t even send you a repaired gun back. You get a refund instead. The official word is below: Continue reading

Rock Island Armory Introduces Sleek New Look for Legendary 1911’s

ria_SmallAs much as we like to talk about accuracy and reliability and such, the look of a gun also plays a not-insignificant role in decisions. One thing that’s bugged me about 1911’s, from an aesthetic point, is how the manufacturers love to take up all that real estate on the side of the slide with their logos and such. Don’t get me wrong, I understand the desire to make one’s self known, but I’m a big fan of the “less is more” mentality.

That’s why I was quite happy with Rock Island Armory’s announcement today about a change to the way they’re displaying their logo: They’re making is smaller and putting on the back of the slide.  Continue reading

Beginner Gun Review: Stoeger Condor Over/Under

IMG_1524For those that have been reading my site for a while, you might remember that I developed a love of skeet shooting after spending a day with Jacksonville University’s Shooting Team. For those that haven’t been reading long, go back and read the archives. I’m not joking. Go and read them. Admittedly, it’s not required but I could really use the page views.

Anyway, the preferred gun of choice for clays is the good ole over under style shotgun. These double barrel guns hold 2 shells and are accurate as can be. They also have almost no moving parts at all so, in theory, they should be way less money than pump action and semi-automatic shotguns, right?  Continue reading
