Your Gun is Bad and You Should Feel Bad

5418959123_b98e1e64ee_nWhen something makes me angry, I tend to joke about it. Making jokes about things is kind of a coping mechanism for me. It’s a way of dealing with my anger. I guess the mentality is that if I can make a joke about it then it’s not worth getting angry over. That doesn’t work to make me less angry, mind you, but the attempt is there and I should get credit for that at least. I often make jokes about a certain mentality I see in the gun blog world that just irks me to no end.  Continue reading

FNH USA Drops the Price of its FNS pistols!

IMG_2288Hey remember that review I did of an FNS-9 earlier this month? If you were interested in that gun, now’s a good time to start looking because the price has dropped by about $100! Keep in mind, this is for the MSRP and the prices of guns that your local store already purchased before the drop will still be the same but new ones coming out will more than likely be a bit more affordable! In my book, this makes a great gun even better! Take a look at their press release below: Continue reading

The Safety Dance – Buying a Safe

BigSafeLet’s be honest, you can’t always carry all your guns with you. Heck, I can barely fit my whole collection in the Noobmobile at this point (don’t ever let someone tell you a Mustang isn’t a practical car). Considering that my guns lack the ability to protect themselves, I want them to be safe when I’m not around. If only there were some way to keep them safe. I’m thinking a kind of box with a combination lock on it that is also fire resistant…but what would we call this safety device?

Since I’ve started Free For All Fridays, I’ve noticed certain themes popping up. One of the more common themes as of late has been questions about gun safes. I can’t blame anyone for wanting one. The great thing is, they don’t just keep your firearms locked away as you can store jewelry, documents and other very important items in them as well. In my opinion, gun owners or not, every house should have at least a small safe in it. Continue reading

Free For All Friday, 4-25-14: Gun Safe Locations and Carry Gun Questions

nraamIt’s Friday again! It looks like all the nasty weather in Florida is clearing up. Segues are difficult, sometimes. The NRAAM is starting up today. People have been talking about it all week and a bunch of companies have announced new products ahead of time. I’ve never really understood why companies reveal their big product in its entirety weeks before a trade show meant to reveal new products. To me, it just ruins the full excitement of seeing a product for the first time. That would be like saying “Tyler Durden isn’t real” weeks before the first trailer for Fight Club even premiered (oh…uhm…spoiler alert). Tease your product. Work up a frenzy. Make people fight to get to your booth to see what the heck you’ve been teasing for a month. Also, it seems more really new stuff is being announced at NRAAM than at SHOT Show. What’s up with that? I’m guessing it’s because all the major companies found out that I already blew my travel budget on SHOT this year. Continue reading

The Stage is Set: What is a 2-Stage Trigger?

GeisseleTriggerIn my “picking a rifle” article, I made a couple of references to a 2 stage trigger and how it was a requirement for my chosen rifle. A couple of readers asked what a 2 stage trigger was and why I wanted one. Considering this is “Year of the Rifle” territory, I’m going to answer this one in its own article rather than in the Free For All Friday posts. Oddly enough, it’s a perfectly simple thing to demonstrate but anytime that I’ve tried to explain it to someone, I find it very difficult to put into a quick explanation. So fair warning: This may get a bit wordy. Continue reading

Free For All Friday: 4-18-14, Ammo Casings, Gun Finishes, and How to Help GunNoob

GunNoob_logo_200x71Friday again! Before we get to the questions, let me just say that I can’t begin to properly convey how much I love working on this site. Without all you readers, however, I’d just be a geek in the corner talking to myself. You, yes you are the ones that make this site. I get messages every now and then with readers asking if there’s any way they can help. I don’t like to beg for money, so I don’t. That’s not to say I’m not above shameless self promotion. The banner ads on the site pay for the hosting and adding an exception to your ad blockers can go a long way to making sure we can continue to afford the site. Beyond that, the biggest thing anyone can do is just spread the world, particularly on Facebook and Twitter.

Speaking of Facebook: they’ve recently changed their algorithm again because they somehow feel that a computer is better at figuring out what their users want to see as opposed to their users. That means that people who have subscribed to our Facebook page might not see our posts (unless we pay Facebook money to guarantee everyone can see our posts). By liking and sharing our posts, however, that makes sure that you and others can see us. The same advice goes to any site or company whose stuff you like: like and share.

Thanks again for your continued support! Let’s get to the questions, that’s why you’re here after all… Continue reading

The Remington R51: The Web’s Current Punching Bag

So apparently the Remington R51 will cause your car to stop working, set your house on fire, give you Ebola and eat your pets…at least that's the impression I get in reading pretty much every review of it. I haven't fired it myself but I did get to play with it at SHOT show and, like the rest of the gun world, I wasn't impressed. This is why I always tell people that, be it cars, gun or what have you, it's not a good idea to buy the very first model year. This is a brand new gun..sort of…and it's sure to have some kinks. Admittedly, there are some problems with this gun that should never have made it past internal testing.

That leads me to wonder how it actually got to market. It's been amusing, to say the least, reading some of the conspiracy theories surrounding its release. Some are saying that Freedom Group is trying to devalue Remington in order to sell it easier. Others think that accountants have taken over and don't know or care about firearm quality and are just looking at bottom lines. Personally, I have my own theory.

Regardless, the blogger dogpile on the R51 is almost absurd at this point. Granted, I don't think it's a great gun either but there's a different between being honest and being harsh just for the sake of being harsh. The video above, while not flattering, was a good and honest review of the gun. Other bloggers have been nowhere near as…reserved…for lack of a better term.

In this day and age, I don't like to see any business fail or put out a bad product. I hope Remington can eventually fix the problems with the gun but I also fear it won't matter. Gun peeps are notoriously unforgiving and usually quite unwilling to give a second chance. Heck, there are people who won't buy Glocks to this day because a few of the originals had some issues with the polymer frame. Remington is going to have one heck of an uphill battle moving forward.

LaserLyte Center Mass Dual Lens Laser Sight

LaserLyte_Center_Mass_1There is just something so science fiction-y about lasers. At the same time, there’s something flat out miraculous about them. To think that light can be concentrated in such a way that it can be bounced of planets at mind bogglingly long distances or cut through even the most strong materials. Heck, when we finally achieve nuclear fusion, chances are it will be lasers that help accomplish it.

If you think back, it was the movie Goldfinger in 1965 where a “real” laser first made its cinematic appearance (“real” in that its design and functionality were like real lasers. It was still a special effect, in the end). Before that point, most people outside of research labs had never seen a real one at work and sci-fi’s portrayal of them up until this point were…lacking in reality. It made headlines at the time. Amazing how far we’ve come, isn’t it? Lasers are so commonplace now that we have them all over our houses, cars, workplaces and we even use them to play with our cats. Continue reading

Free for All Friday: 4-11-14, Eye strain and Misc. AR parts

customfamilysmallBeen on a bit of a tear about those stick figure family stickers on cars. I’ve noticed a growing backlash against them as of late and that makes me happy. I saw one sticker today that said “Your stick figure family will be exterminated” and had a bunch of Daleks attacking. It made me laugh. While I doubt reality supports it, I’d like to think that one of my early articles had a bit to do with the anti-stick figure trend. Better living through delusions, I always say.

You know what’s way more awesome than stick figure families? People who send in questions for Free for All Friday! We had two questions this week: Continue reading

Beginner Gun Review: FNH FNS-9

IMG_2288Although this is a review for the FNH FNS-9 pistol, I’m going to take a moment and talk about the Glock 19. The G19 is actually the very first gun I ever reviewed on this site. Ever since that review, I have referred to the Glock 19 as a “Goldilocks gun”. It’s size allows it to easily be concealed for daily carry but it’s not so small that it’s uncomfortable to shoot. In fact, you can spend a whole day at the range with this gun with no problems at all.

There’s a good reason why the Glock 19 is Glock’s most popular model if not one of the more popular guns on the market. It’s no wonder that just about every company makes a striker fired handgun in a similar shape, size and frame. Smith & Wesson has the M&P 9c, Springfield has the XDm 3.8 and, of course, FNH has the FNS-9 pistol. See how I brought that back around? Continue reading
