Beginner Gun Review: Springfield Armory XDm

xdm-awesomeI get asked thousands of times a day “Hey, Noob, what should I get for my first gun?” Ok, it’s more like once every couple of months…if that. Either way, I usually recommend some kind of a .22 to learn on. Then they say “yeah right. Now seriously, what should I get?” Then I tell them a Glock or XDm in 9mm. I then go over the reason why I recommend those two and, at some point during the explanation, their eyes will glaze over and they’ll start daydreaming about bunnies. Then they’ll go off and buy a .44 Magnum and then complain that the recoil is horrific and that they can’t shoot it very well.

But I digress…

Whenever I recommend the Glock, it’s because of the legendary reliability of the weapon. I usually include the phrase “I have a Glock 19 and it’s been great.” I then recommend the XDm because of the accessories it comes with but I include the phrase “I’ve never actually shot one but I’ve heard nothing but good things about them.”

Well, fellow Noobs, I finally tried one. Continue reading

This is Not a Review of the M&P 45

mandpOne of the things that gun bloggers like to do is review guns. Frankly, it’s one of the main reasons any of us to do this in the first place. Oh sure, we speak proudly of how we’re here to “help new shooters” or “promote gun rights” and so on. Ultimately, in the back of our heads, we’re all thinking “if this site gets big enough, I can justify playing with more guns! I might even be able to score some test guns!!” Sorry, fellow bloggers, I had to let our big secret out. I do this for two reasons:
  1. I think it makes for a funny, if not self-deprecating joke
  2. The fundamental problem with that whole “not big enough blog yet” is the root problem of the following commentary on the M&P 45 and why I won’t be posting an official review.

Handy Dandy Lower Parts Kit Guide.

Ok, so as it turns out, the lower parts kits rarely come with a guide that tells you what the heck all these little pieces are. I sat down and created one for myself real quick for the build. I would be remiss if I didn’t share it with you all.

Click here to download it. You’ll need Adobe Acrobat to real the file.

Product Review: Ballistol

ballistolI’ve been using Hoppe’s No.  9 to clean my gun since I’ve owned guns. Mainly because they sell it everywhere here and it’s cheap. It was only well into my hobby that I noticed the little disclaimer on the label that said “Not recommended for use on Nickel plated guns”…which is lovely considering my first gun was nickel plated. Fortunately, that revelation came right after I had swapped to a Glock as my primary weapon. I have used Hoppe’s No. 9 to clean my Glock from day one.

I had heard the great Hickok45 wax poetic about Ballistol on many occasions. This is a man whose opinion I respect greatly so his enthusiastic praise of the stuff, which doesn’t sponsor him in any way, made me at least curious about it. Continue reading

AK vs. AR: The Rebuttal

Since The Noob has thrown his lot in with the AK group, I shall play devil’s advocate and support the AR platform. Having shot both, let me just go ahead and say that I like both for their unique virtues. No matter which you take with you into a bad situation, you will not feel outgunned. Continue reading

Rifle Review: Norinco SKS

When people mention “Russian” or “Communist Bloc” weapons, they automatically think of the AK-47, but before the AK-47 changed the world, there was the Samozaryadnyj Karabin sistemy Simonova or “SKS” for short. The SKS is a gas-operated, semi-automatic rifle chambered for the Russian 7.62X39mm round. Despite being a military rifle, the SKS is not an “assault rifle.” It has a fixed, non-detachable 10-round magazine, wood stock, and a manual safety. So should this be the rifle for you? What’s the condition?

1911_jeffcooperHave you ever heard someone mention carrying in “condition zero” or they stay in “condition orange” when they’re in some areas? What the heck are they talking about? Logic would tell you that “condition red” is probably bad. After all, we’ve heard Captain Kirk put the Enterprise on “red alert” in just about every episode. It’s safe to assume, then, that condition orange probably not good either. Still, though, what the heck?  Continue reading
