The Road Ahead: Coming up in 2015

I wanted to start this year off with a kind of “State of the Blog” type of posting. There is an incredibly important thing I want to lead off with. Namely, thanking you. You, the person reading this right now. I want to thank you for helping to make this site what it is. Without you, I’d just be a gun loving nerd talking to himself….and that would be weird. When I started this site, 3 years ago, the only readers were my wife and parents. I just checked the site analytics; it's getting almost 110,000 views a month! That is HUGE for a blog like this! It wouldn't have happened without awesome people like you. I can’t possibly express the gratitude I feel that you stop by my little plot of land on this vast internet. All I can do is thank you over and over again and promise to try my best to continue doing the stuff that brought you here in the first place while trying to get even better.

With that being said, I’m excited about 2015!

Last year, we did the Year of the Rifle. That means that this year absolutely has to be the Year of the Shotgun! For this entire year, I’m going to be putting a focus on shotgun related articles, guides and information. Last year, my goal was at least 1 rifle related article a month. I’m upping the ante this year. Shotguns are incredibly versatile weapons and there is a surprisingly large amount of information to cover. There’s a bunch of fun reviews lined up as well as **gasp** maybe even some videos. I’m looking forward to this and I hope you are too!

As I said a while back, I’m skipping the SHOT Show this year and opting to attend the NRA National Convention. It always seems like more new stuff is announced at that show than at SHOT…which makes no sense to me but either way I’m looking forward to checking out all the fun new stuff.

There's a lot to look forward to and I've got the best readers in the web to come along for the ride!

Noobvember is here! This month’s focus is….

hardhatThe air is getting colder. The clocks have been rolled back an hour. There’s pumpkin spice stuff everywhere and stores are putting out Christmas decorations even though it’s still TWO FREAKING MONTHS AWAY. That can only mean one thing: Noobvember is here! This is a month where we break away from our normal schedule and focus heavily on one particular topic. We go in depth with commentary, education and observations 3 times a week for the entire month of November.

This Noobvember, we’re going to focus on the absolute most important part of shooting. The thing that is 100% necessary every time you even look at a gun much less use one. Without further ado, this month’s Noobvember topic is…..

Gun Safety!

We’re going to take an in-depth look at the safety rules commandments along with the whys and hows of each. Along with that, we’re going to dispel some myths. Finally we’re going to take a look at how safety affects us all because at the end of the day, the safer we are as a whole, the better off we all will be.

So put on your hard hat and fasten your safety belts, this month is going to get safe!

Let Me Introduce Myself

15-22 smallGood day to all the wonderful Noob readers out there. My name is Chris and I am pleased to introduce myself as the newest member of the GunNoob writing staff. While my writing may not be quite as humorous as Mr. Noob (we all need to aspire to something greater), I’ll do my best to stay both informative and entertaining. I look forward to covering topics ranging from gun reviews and gun safety to my experiences as a newb competative shooter. I’ll even toss in some embarrasing anecdotes (mine as well as others) from my time spent on the range.

A little bit about myself… I am a practicing architect in Atlanta, Georgia. I have a few years experience as a gun owner and shooting afficianodo and have been a Range Safety Officer (RSO) for the past two years at an indoor range just outside of Atlanta. I also have some blog writing experience, as I have writen for the women’s shooting blog, Armed Candy, in the past.  I am currently looking to get into some competative shooting, both indoor pistol as well as outdoor 3-gun competitions. When i’m not working or shooting, I ride my motorcycle (Buell Lightning), play way too many video games (currently stuck in a Borderlands 2 loop), and play on a number of adult (aka: beer drinking) softball teams.  Feel free to ask me anything gun related.  Cheers!!! New Guide: Minute of Angle?

Continuing with our Year of the Rifle initiative, the following guide has been added to our Rifle Guides Section. Head on over there to read it or check it out below!

piSpend any amount of time looking at rifles and scopes and you’re going to see a strange acronym pop up: “MOA”. Those three letters stand for Minute of Angle. Strangely enough, that tells us absolutely nothing about what that actually means. Continue reading

State of the Blog: Q1 2014

GunNoob_logo_200x71There’s a lot of things happening here at GunNoob.com so I thought I’d make a quick post to let you know about some of them.

First off: some bad news. There was a nasty glitch with the previous version of DotNetNuke (the software I use to maintain GN) that was preventing email notifications from going out properly. This means that a lot of registered users didn’t get their confirmation emails. Even worse, I wasn’t getting the messages from the Contact Us page either! The problem was patched recently and emails are going out again. I got a flood of messages and I will reply to every one of them…it’s just a bit late. I’ll also go ahead and manually authorize all the accounts that have not been activated. Please accept my apologies.

Mea culpas out of the way, on to the good news! Continue reading

2014: The Year of the Rifle

riflesPistols? Oh yeah. I’ve got those down. Shotguns? Clay disks beware. Rifles? …Oh..hey..there’s something distracting over there. What? Oh yeah, rifles…uhm…sure…I’ve shot a .22LR rifle a few times. What do you mean “long range”? Twenty five yards is pretty long. I mean, that’s a quarter of a football field and those pro players get payed a lot of money to run 25 yards, right? Two hundred and fifty yards?! Are you insane? Oh…that’s average for rifles? Team Hornady Takes on Fallen Brethren 3-Gun Challenge

gI_95427_Hornady logo_3Grand Island, NE: Three hundred fifteen competitors stood at attention as the American flag was raised and sang the National Anthem during the opening ceremonies of the Fallen Brethren 3-Gun Challenge. But it was the round of applause afterwards that set the spirit of the match, held October 4-6, 2013 at the Spartan Tactical Range Complex near Jacksboro, Texas. Now on its third year, the event honors the heroes who fell at the Battle of Mogadishu 20 years ago. Continue reading
