Big Bang Theory Episode Makes for a Great Learning Opportunity!

A very funny scene showed up on last night’s Big Bang Theory. Leonard took Penny to the gun range on a date and, well, things didn’t turn out so well. This scene actually presents a very nice learning situation.

I don’t know if they filmed in an actual range or a set but they got it perfect. First the giant “Range Safety Rules” you can see through the window as well as the one posted inside the bay is typical of all ranges so the set designers, if it was a set, got it spot on there.

Ultimately, the one flaw was Penny racked the slide to check if it was empty then loaded the magazine. That is the correct procedure BUT she never racked it to load an actual round. Little continuity mistake but oh well.

Then Leonard, who’s experience with guns was admittedly limited to video games, threw safety out the window with results that wouldn’t be so hilarious in real life.

Let’s run down the list, shall we?
Right off the bat, that was a 1911 which has a very short and relatively light trigger. As a result, someone who is new to shooting should be given extra instruction regardless of their protests. While some would disagree with me, I would never recommend a 1911 for a first time shooter.

Rules broken? He didn’t keep the gun pointed down range. You can actually clearly read this rule on the signs multiple times leading up to that point.

Secondly? Keep your finger off the trigger at all times until you are ready to fire.

Finally, never point the gun at anything you don’t want killed or destroyed. In this case, he pointed it at his foot.

Had Leonard followed any one of those safety rules, he would have been fine. On top of that, Penny should have been a little more proactive in safety. Keep that in mind anytime you’re bringing someone to shoot for the first time: safety first and above all else.
