Coffee and Ammo. What could go right?!

Look at it this way: if you are in a situation where you feel the need to shoot someone in order to save your life, chances are your hands won’t be as steady as you think they will.

Actually, I think it’s a safe bet you’re going to be shaking like a…thing that shakes a lot. Anyway, if you’ve been practicing at the range with a steady hand and a bad-assed pose, how well do you think you’re going to handle it when you’re pointing that gun at a home invader at 2am?

Statistics say about 50% worse than at the range.

How can you hedge your bets though? It’s not like you can put yourself into a life threatening situation right before you hit the range, right? (well, if you’ve ever seen the way people drive around here you might but I digress).

There is something you can do to mimic the effects: load up on caffeine. I drink a massive soda about 20 minutes before I hit the range. By the time I’m getting out there my hands are shaking from the stimulant and my accuracy goes down the toilet. Just the way I want it. Now I have a good idea how the gun is going to react when I’m about ready to wet myself.

Added effect: do a bunch of push-ups before hand. Your arms will be tired and lifting the gun will result in added strain.

I should note: you might not want to try this in a little indoor range. The place I shoot has these private, outdoor alcoves where you can practice all kinds of stuff from running and shooting to multi-target and more. Most gun clubs have similar.

Remember The Commandments above all else and be safe.
