Gear Review: LaserLyte Reaction Tyme Targets

ReactionTyme1It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of dry fire practice. It’s a great way to build that tasty muscle memory that leads to those delicious pistol shots. In the past, I’ve raved about the LaserLyte Laser Training System. It’s like adding sweet, butter cream frosting to your dry fire practice and the ability to analyse how you did is like putting sprinkles on that frosting.

I just went back and read what I wrote. I should note that I’m back on my diet. Sorry.

But I digress….

When training with the Laser Training System, there will come a point where you are no longer building muscle memory but reinforcing the muscle memory. That may not be the most accurate description but it’s the best way I can think of to describe it in once sentence. Essentially, you will eventually be able to hit that target from anywhere in your house and from just about any angle. Where this a video game in the RPG genre, you’d hear this ding and a swirl of light would surround you because you’ve leveled up! Grats!

So now that you’re a level two Pistolero, how do you gain XP and continue on from this point? Well, the range for starters. In terms of dry fire practice, however, why not upgrade to the LaserLyte Reaction Tyme Target!

These little targets are the peanut butter to the Laser Training System’s jelly. They’re the BBQ sauce to the LTS’s spare ribs. They’re the..oh curse this diet.

ReactionTyme2The Reaction Tyme Targets work off similar technology. It’s a tiny target with a laser sensor behind it. The use is where all the difference comes in. Where the LTS gives you feedback on approximately where your shot hit, these are concerned with two thing: did it hit and how quickly.

Here’s what it does: At some random interval (between 3 to 7 seconds), the target will beep and light up. At that point, you have 3 seconds to line up your shot and hit the target. Once you’ve hit, the target beeps and flashes twice to let you know you’ve hit it. The kit comes with two targets and they are tiny at 3’x3.75’x1’ and the sensor is a bit smaller. In other words, you’ve gotta be accurate with these. The target area is the equivalent of the inner three rings of the LTS target and, at speed, you’ll find yourself missing these a lot initially even if you’ve gotten quite good with the LTS. It’s amazing how much of a difference in technique that these require.

So how does this help you? It teaches you rapid target acquisition and rapid transition. In non-operator terms, that’s how to aim quick and how to change what you’re shooting at. This is great for defensive shooting because it’s not always just one attacker. At the same time, if you have even a fleeting interest in competition, this is a great way to get started with your training.

The two initial targets are a challenge in and of themselves but adding more can really beef up your difficulty levels. Their tiny size lets you put them anywhere and it’s fun to challenge yourself. They still have the same range as the LTS so you can really put some distance between you and these targets. You’ll find yourself putting them on bookshelves and other places around your house. I have 3 targets at the moment and from my own personal experience with them, it’s amazing how frantic it can get with just three. I’m planning on adding 2 more in the near future and I’m sure it will only get crazier.

As I said earlier, if you already have the Laser Training System, this is the perfect addition. I’d go so far as to say you’d be crazy not to add these to it.
