State of the Blog: Q1 2014

GunNoob_logo_200x71There’s a lot of things happening here at GunNoob.com so I thought I’d make a quick post to let you know about some of them.

First off: some bad news. There was a nasty glitch with the previous version of DotNetNuke (the software I use to maintain GN) that was preventing email notifications from going out properly. This means that a lot of registered users didn’t get their confirmation emails. Even worse, I wasn’t getting the messages from the Contact Us page either! The problem was patched recently and emails are going out again. I got a flood of messages and I will reply to every one of them…it’s just a bit late. I’ll also go ahead and manually authorize all the accounts that have not been activated. Please accept my apologies.

Mea culpas out of the way, on to the good news!

GN is growing like crazy. The Year of the Rifle project is getting a lot of attention and I’m incredibly excited to be working on it. Popularity is a bit of a double edged sword, however. As the site gets more popular, the costs of maintaining that site go up as well. In order to offset those costs, I’ve opened up the advertising on GN beyond just Google adwords. Thanks to Passionfruitads.com, I’m now able to sell ads to directly to businesses and individuals. You can find out more information about the advertisements and space available by heading over to the advertiser page.

Also, we’ve set up a store! Clicking the Store link in the top menu will take you to our Amazon affiliate store. I’ve handpicked a number of items that are perfect for new shooters. There’s also a section where you can get some of the items that we’ve reviewed. Anything purchased through that store helps us out tremendously.

It doesn’t just help us, however…

I didn’t start Gun Noob to make money. Anyone who starts a blog expecting to become rich is barking up the wrong tree. It can be a goal, mind you, but it’s a goal right up there with winning the lottery. Personally, I wanted to do some good. My main goal was to help make people safer but it doesn’t have to stop there. Now that the site is pretty well established, I want to start giving back. Starting now, any money the site brings in outside of normal operating costs (“profits”, in other words) will be donated to charity. I’ve got a couple picked out at the moment and we’ll be talking more about them later. Right now, however, know that any advertising you buy and any store items you purchase will be helping out some organizations that need all the help they can get.

This is something I feel very strongly about and I hope you will help us to help others.

Finally, I want to thank you all for continuing to stop by this site. I know I’ve said it a lot before but I just truly don’t feel like I can thank you enough for making this site what it is. I hope you’ll continue to stop by and support me and this site in the years to come.
