Gear Review: 5.11 Tactical Pants/Shorts

tduAnyone who knows me, knows that I love cargo pants. I own about 30 pairs of pants/shorts and 28 of them are cargos. It’s not just me though. Pretty much every geek and nerd that I know loves them as well. There’s something about having all that extra storage space. I think my freakish love of extra pockets started way back when I was in high school. I started doing magic tricks as a hobby when I was quite young. When cargo pants hit the scene, I quickly realized that I could carry many more tricks with me what to impress the ladies with. After all, that’s why anyone picks up magic: to impress the ladies. It doesn’t ever work, mind you, but still.

Where was I?

Oh yeah, an unhealthy obsession with cargo pants. I’ve recently discovered a maker of pants that has made my pocket dreams come true: 5.11 Tactical. Sorry Old Navy, Arizona and Dockers. I’ve…I’ve found someone else. It’s not you. It’s me. 5.11 Tactical is just able to satisfy me in ways you’ve never been able. Maybe we can still hang out every now and then when the Tactical Pants are in the wash? Continue reading

Prepare to repel boarders!

It’s not often that I get asked, “What gun should I use against pirates?” According to the fine people working the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney World in Orlando, Fla., a cutlass and blunderbuss are a minimum, and a good brass cannon if your schooner can support such a thing. However, I make room for the possibility that this person was asking about the more current pirate scourge faced by people sailing by the Horn of Africa, in which case a cutlass will probably get you laughed at by a group of illiterate Somalis holding AK-47s and RPGs.

First, a disclaimer. I’m not a sailor, so I’m a boat noob. After researching the issue a little, I can tell you that whether or not to carry a weapon aboard your vessel is a decision you’re going to have to agonize over. There are so many considerations you have to take into account, and at the end you, and you alone, have to decide whether it’s worth it. Continue reading

Beginner Gun Review: Ruger LCR

lcr1You certainly can’t say that Sturm, Ruger & Company has been resting on their laurels over the past few years. Their LCx line of guns has been amazingly popular and has really made the pocket pistol a major industry. While certainly not the first tiny .380 pistol, the LCP is the one that really kickstarted the recent trend. Before that, the main choice was James Bond’s Walther PPK.

When Ruger released the LCP, they also released a 5 shot, .38 Special revolver called the LCR (Light Compact Revolver). Weighing in at a mere 13 ouces, this little gun packs a big punch. The majority of the gun is made of polymer with a stainless steel chamber and barrel. The chamber itself is aggressively fluted to save weight. There’s no external hammer on this gun so it’s hard for pocket lint to get in and mess it up. This is the epitome of a snub-nose carry revolver. Continue reading

shoot_bigI started talking with Julie Golob via Twitter a couple weeks ago. I’ll be 100% honest here: I wasn’t too familiar with her until recently. The Commandments Count at Gun Shows Also…

So I woke up this morning to see a story about a man who accidentally shot himself at a gun show over the weekend. You can read the article for yourself here.

Long story short: he was reloading his gun in the parking lot when, in the process of reloading, he shot himself in the leg. The article, sadly, is quite vague on the details. Was it a revolver? Semi Auto? BFG 9000? There are a couple of scenarios that come to mind as to why this would happen:   Continue reading

Oh, snap!

“So, I just bought this gun, and I kind of want to handle it and make sure it feeds right and everything… and I have this box of bullets, so…”

Okay, stop. Put the bullets down, lock up the gun, and get in the car. We’re going shopping.

I’ve been where you are.  You just bought a $500 gun, you can’t get to the range for awhile, and you want to learn how it works. How it cycles ammo. How to load it, etc. The problem is with most automatic pistols and rifles, the weapon behaves differently when it’s unloaded, and with some it’s actually harmful to dry fire it. So what do you do?

Well, fortunately, you don’t have to put rounds in your firearm to get some familiarity training with it. The answer to your problem lies with two unassuming products: Snap-caps and dummy rounds. Continue reading

The Dream List

Some of the other gun blogs are asking what guns people would buy today if money were no object. Okay, I’ll play your silly game…

1. A mismatched British .303 SMLE that I wouldn’t feel bad about converting into a good hog gun.

2. A 6.5mm Grendel AR15 with a 20-inch barrel and good scope.

3. A .308 FN FAL for those times when 5.56 just isn’t good enough.

4. A Coonan 1911 in .357 magnum.

5 . A Remington 12-gauge 1187 camo’d up and ready for turkey season.
