Free For All Friday 6-27-2014: Rare guns and CCW positions…

smallestBarI got married a couple years ago to the lovely Mrs. Noob. Due to various reasons, we weren’t able to go on our honeymoon right away. Last week, we finally were able to go. We spent a week in Buffettstan a.k.a. Key West, Florida. Amazing how a week of being almost completely unplugged from everything helps clear the mind. As much as I feel refreshed and ready to go, it’s still hard to get back into the swing of things. I came back to a bunch of emails and messages and I’m slowly working my way through them. Side note: there are a surprisingly large number of gun ranges in the Florida Keys. Didn’t expect that, for some reason.

Time to trim up our pencil thin mustaches, have a cheeseburger in paradise and change some latitudes and attitudes with this week’s Free For All Friday questions!

I’m looking for a couple of uncommon firearms. I’ve tried most every gun and pawn shop in my area and most people have never heard of or seen what I’m looking for. They aren’t on gunbroker or armslist either, so I’m at a loss. Any suggestions on how to find rare firearms? -Christian C.

Without knowing the specific gun you’re looking for, it’s kind of hard to give more than a few pointers. Gun Broker’s stuff updates constantly so my first recommendation would be to keep checking back there. Just because they don’t have it when you first check doesn’t mean they won’t in an hour. Beyond that, I’m going to make an assumption: whenever people talk about “rare guns” they’re usually talking about either antiques or old military weapons. For antiques, take a look at various auction houses around the country. The best one that comes to mind is the famous Red Baron Antiques. They post the list of things that will be auctioned off and you can bid over the phone.

When it comes to old military firearms, you’re going to want to check out the Show of Shows put on by the Ohio Valley Military Society in Louisville, KY every year.

One final resource is a website called “Reddit”. Reddit is, essentially, one of the largest message boards on the internet. They have hundred of sub boards (called subreddits) that are dedicated to just about every subject you can imagine. If more than 5 people are interested in something, I’d be willing to bet there’s a subreddit for it. In this case, check out the GunsForSale subreddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/GunsForSale. There, you can make a post titles “[WTB] The Gun You’re looking for” (with WTB meaning “wanting to buy”). Someone, somewhere will know someone that has that gun. Trust me on this one. Reddit is a GIANT community.

Good luck in your search!

Dragon-Holsters-SIG-P220I’m a big guy. It’s hard to find a spot to hide a carry weapon (a PX storm we spoke about before). I don’t want to put in my front. Like you, I don’t like the idea of a loaded weapon pointing at the only thing I have going for me these days. The side is tough because of my size. That, leaves my back, which is not the best option. I don’t like pocket guns, so I thought I might be able to use a derringer of some sort. I could easily hide a small two shot derringer. I understand the downside of only two shots and willing to accept that. What do you think? Any derringers you like? -Skylar R.

While I know I’m going to get some hate mail for this one, I am not a fan of derringers in any way, shape or form. I don’t like them as primary carry and I don’t even recommend them as a backup. With that out of the way, let’s look at some stuff that might help you carry your PX.

The first problem might be the holster itself. Some holsters just don’t sit right with people. At the same time, a holster that fits person A might not work with person B and visa versa. Avoid those nylon “Uncle Mike’s” holsters at all costs. Look into a Crossbreed (or better yet, Dragon Holster) or other similar style.

Position-wise, you mentioned appendix, side and back. Personally, I don’t like any of those positions either. Try this one: consider your direct side as 3:00 and your spine would be 6:00. Try putting the gun around the 4:30-4:45 position on the clock face. I’m not a tiny boy either but I comfortably carry a full sized SIG P220 in that position regularly.
